In the first paragraph, the issue of the transfer and assimilation of Western political concepts to Japan is framed from a perspective that makes particular use of the policy studies in the field of so-called lesson-drawing. The second section introduces some methodological problems directly related to the transferability of political concepts that have traditionally been raised in comparative political research. In the last and most conspicuous part of the article, mainly based the use of the literature in the original language and of primary and secondary sources on the political debate of the Meiji era, the ways in which the Western political ideas and concepts that have transited into modern Japan were translated and assimilated are explored.

Abstract – The article presents a historical analysis of the tensions between the Italian Royal Navy and the Italian Royal Air Force in the period after the First World War. Tensions were exacerbated by post-conflict budget cuts, coupled with onerous post-war commitments and the management of significant post-war crises. Particularly affected was the Naval Air Force, which was equipped with a limited number of torpedo bombers in poor operating conditions. In addition, the establishment of the Royal Air Force led to the decision of several naval officers to transfer to the new armed force. Furthermore, profound strategic divergences emerged between the Navy and the Air Force, followed by poor cooperation between the two forces, making joint exercises and planning extremely difficult. The results of this become evident during the Second World War, when the lack of cooperation between the Navy and the Air Force led to several embarrassing episodes for the Italian Armed Forces. After the war, the lessons learnt made it possible to embark on a path aimed at better integrating the two forces and ensuring the synergy essential for a successful operation.

Giacomo Innocenti, The Reorganization of the Italian Navy in the 1950s

Abstract – Questo saggio analizzerà l’evoluzione della Marina Militare Italiana negli anni successivi alla Seconda Guerra Mondiale, in particolare durante gli anni Cinquanta.

Can Zeyrek, Informal Institutions and the Rule of Law or the Contrast between Constitution and Constitutional Reality – Lessons from the Western Balkans

Abstract – The primary objective of this article is to scrutinize Italy’s diplomatic actions during the Berlin Congress, specifically in relation to the arrangements concerning Montenegro, within the broader framework of international relations history. The Line was the last border of British India to be settled, over twenty years after the Persia-India border, laid down by the Goldsmid mission in 1870-72. The Durand Line has always been a source of trouble. Cutting through Pashtun’s traditional settlement areas, it has led to controversies since the beginning. At the same time, allowing the most relentless tribes to find safe haven in Afghanistan from British retribution, it contributed to fuelling cross-border violence. The establishment, in 1901, of the North-West Frontier Province (today’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), the British withdrawal behind the administrative border, and the adoption of the Frontier Crimes Regulations delegating to the local headmen the task of maintaining law and order highlight the limits the Line encountered in isolating the British possessions from their turbulent neighbours. Things did not change with the end of the Raj. On the contrary, the ambition to establish a “Greater Pashtunistan” merging large portions of Afghan and Pakistani territories put the border under increasing strain. In the following years, the collapse of Afghan statehood led to growing demands for a revision of the Durand Line, also endorsed (for a certain period) by former Afghan President Hamid Karzai (in office: 2004-14). Meanwhile, the porous Afghan-Pakistani border has increasingly emerged as one of the hot spots for Central Asia’s political and military security, emphasizing the weakness of a border that has proven largely incapable of fulfilling the tasks for which it has been conceived.

Gli Autori

È possibile scaricare i files della rivista integrale in PDF cliccando qui e in ePub cliccando qui e in MOBI cliccando qui
